it's pretty difficult for native speakers of japanese to pronounce because they have trouble pronouncing "l", and instead they pronounce it as more of an "r" so armin's last name, arlert, would sound something like "arerureruto" if you were to reeeeally emphasis the japanese accent B)
my friend from japan has told me that a lot of fans have trouble pronouncing it and they make fun of his last name instead >v<
BUT! we(or at least just me) do have a problem with Auruo's name... it's just unlogic(for me) it has too many vowels next to each other so it's hard for us to say it 0---0 guess it's like I'd try to say your version of Armins last name XD
hey out of curiosity, how do you guys pronounce jean's and levi's names? jeans name is an annoying topic amongst english speaking fans >v>;; and i think it's just me that has trouble reading levi's name as they pronounce it LOL instead of leeveye, i always read it as lehvee Q//v//Q''
What made it worse was the fact that Bert hardly had any character development until the latest Chapters so some people really couldn't remember his name or even Bertholdt himself! XD My favourite is ベロベルト・ブーバー(Beroberuto Boober). It's the names of two Pokemon. (Beroberuto = Lickilicky, Boober = Magmar) i.imgur.com/LGTHJZ2.jpg Also, it became a meme(?) to shout "When will you ever learn!? His name isn't *wrong name*, it's *another wrong name* idiot!!!". HAHAHAHAHA!!!
>>how do you guys pronounce jean's and levi's names? Jean = Jan Levi = Rivai Jean is a common French name (ex: the director of "Alien Ressurrection"), and Levi's name was taken from a character from a documentary film called "Jesus Camp". It irritates me after 20+ Episodes, people are still pronouncing Jean's name "Jeen" when obviously the characters in the anime are pronouncing it "Jan"!! I mean come on, he's not a minor character; you hear his name being called every now and then. I know you guys don't understand Japanese, but can't you make out the characters' names? I do when I see a movie/anime/etc in a language I don't know. It just baffles me.
More common pronunciation problems: 1. Mike is NOT pronounced like the nickname of Michael!!!11one It's "Mi-ke", not "Maik"!! (ミケ) He and Levi are names from the Bible. 2. Erwin/Irvin is pronounced "Eruvin" in Japanese (エルヴィン) so "Irvin" is wrong. (please correct me if the "I" is in fact pronounced "E") 3. In the original Japanese version, Samuel (サムエル / the boy that Sasha saved when Colossal appeared) is pronounced "Sa-mu-e-eru" instead of the common "Sa-myu-e-ru" (ex: Samuel L. Jackson). I'm assuming that's how it's pronounced in German. 4. Annie is spelled "Ani" (アニ) in the original Japanese version so it really confuses me whether you're supposed to make the "ni" part long (Annie) or short (Ani). I kept spelling it Ani for a while, but now I spell it Annie because I know "Annie" is an existing name while I'm unsure about "Ani". Maybe the short version is the correct German way?
Gunther is pronounced "Gunta" (グンタ) in Japanese. It sounds cute, but when I saw the English spelling, I "understood" his name. I WANT TO KNOW HOW "AURUO/ORUO/etc" ("Oruo" in Japanese / オルオ) IS SUPPOSED TO BE PROPERLY SPELLED. AND ALSO THAT GARRISON CAPTAIN THAT'S CONSTANTLY FREAKING OUT!! (キッツ・ヴェールマン / Kittsu Veeruman)
LOOL oh my god that's hilarious, i wish we had puns like that TTvTT;; hehe i saw a post on tumblr a while ago ( lemonbutt.tumblr.com/post/5975… ) that shows what you're saying B')) seeing it again is making me laugh all over again LOL
i knew the part about jean's name being french (so obviously, properly pronounced jan), but i didn't know about levi's name was taken from a documentary! o: haha aside from hearing it almost every episode, i still mispronounce both of their names >v<;; it's purely out of habit that i keep reading it as "jeen" and "lehvi", although i know their proper pronunciations @_@;
and woah!! that's a lot more pronounciation issues than i thought @u@;; thank you for taking the time to actually write all of that out!! i don't really know how to reply to all of that aside from being able to say that auruo is probably the most common spelling i see!
AND NOO AHH DON'T APOLOGISE i love it when people take the time to reply >v< i wish i had more to say back haha, i'd love to talk more with you about snk QvQ; sorry it took me so long to reply, i've been rather busy with last minute summer assignments before school starts for me x__x;;
I pronounce it lehvi too though I know the correct way to say it. My reasoning is that lehvi just sounds cuter and no-one where I live cares or even knows about snk enough to correct me... I don't know if that's good or bad.
